ADVISORY


Friday's long advisory focused on the power of language and the difference between intent and impact. Eighth graders have practiced communicating with each other in several different structured formats this semester. This allows them to learn different ways of being in conversation and to develop their social skills. Sharing their ideas and feelings as well as listening to others helps them build community.

SCIENCE


Are diamonds really a girl's best friend? Forever? What if there were no smartphones? How hard is it to defend a position that you don't believe in? In 8th grade science, students have been engaged in researching the mining of diamonds and rare earth metals and are in the process of preparing to hold a debate following a 3-a-side format. We discussed the art of debate, the value of having to convincingly argue for a position that may seem morally or ethically questionable, and the importance of defending claims with evidence and reasoning. We also discussed how to distinguish fake news from real news, and how to fact-check that a source is accurate by cross-referencing the information across multiple reliable sources. ANNOUNCEMENTS:

SSAT's will be held this weekend at Gordon. Please remind your child to get some rest and eat a good breakfast! Students should also bring pencils, erasers , and a book. They should be here by 7:45!


In advisory this week, each group will be having a secret snowflake gift exchange. Each student will be paired up with someone else in their advisory.  Spending limit at most is $5.00.  We will be exchanging gifts on Thursday!

Thank you , thank you , thank you!!! We have just finished another successful Turkey Trot!  It was  a fun filled event,  in which our community worked together to raise food to support 40 families at one of our favorite service learning sites, Pleasant View Elementary School!

ADVISORY


We had an incredible week in advisory featuring the 2nd annual 8th grade Halloween advisory costume contest. Each advisory dressed as a group costume. There were lifeguards (Jutras advisory), Pacman (Horton) A family vacation (Burnstein) and the cast of Toy Story (Romanzi) which was marked by their singing of You’ve Got A Friend in Me. The 8th graders did an outstanding job of leading the middle school by example with the exact right amount of spirit and enthusiasm. Coming up in advisory: the Middle School Turkey Trot on 11/18! This one mile walk/race during long advisory will help collect can goods for students and families at Pleasantview Elementary School.
